1) 1, 2, 6, 11 June 2024 [Opera] – Greek National Opera – Lukas Karytinos – Hugo de Ana: Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca
This year, the Greek National Opera opens again the Odeon of Herodes Atticus events in 2024.
They present one of the most popular operas in the repertoire, Puccini’s Tosca, featuring protagonists of international acclaim.
Tosca by Hugo de Ana (revival directed by Katerina Petsatodi) is thrilling, dramatic, and utterly faithful to the composer’s spirit, as well as the historical context referred to in the libretto.
The impressive sets – a huge Crucifixion, a sacred table, a painting studio – are complemented by spectacular projections of Rome’s monuments, religious symbols, and videos that add a cinematic dimension to the production.
2) 13 June 2024 [Contemporary Music] – ANOHNI and the Johnsons (World Premiere)
For the first time in a decade, ANOHNI presents a series of concerts with the Johnsons, along with nine musicians including Julia Kent (cello), Maxim Moston (violin), Doug Wieselman (multi-instrumentalist), Gael Rakotondrabe (piano), Leo Abrahams (guitarist), and Jimmy Hogarth (guitarist/producer).
ANOHNI’s musical journey spans several genres – from electronic experimental to avant-classical, dance, and soul.
She gained international recognition with her album I Am a Bird Now (2005), which won the British Mercury Prize.
Since then, she has released The Crying Light (2009), Swanlights (2010), live recordings Cut the World (2012), and TURNING (2014).
In 2016, she released the politically charged electronic album HOPELESSNESS, produced by Hudson Mohawke and Daniel Lopatin, acclaimed as one of the year’s top ten albums by The New York Times.
That same year, she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song for the environmental elegy “Manta Ray,” featured in the movie Racing Extinction (dir. Louie Psihoyos, 2015).
With her sixth studio album, titled My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross (2023), ANOHNI once again focuses on social constructions, spirituality, and our relationship with the “biosphere”.
The album was distinguished as the “album of the year” by The New Yorker.
3) 15 June 2024 [Classical Music] – Emanuel Ax – Leonidas Kavakos – Yo-Yo Ma: Works by Beethoven
This year, we are privileged to witness three superstars of classical music on the stage of Herodion.
We are talking about three leading soloists, each known for their unparalleled technique and interpretive skill.
Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma have been sharing the stage in recent years, captivating audiences in the world’s most prestigious concert halls.
Together, they have recorded three albums dedicated to Beethoven’s works.
This collaboration has proven exceptionally successful and, it seems, equally delightful for the trio.
A magical encounter that offers the opportunity to enjoy three genius performers in a high-level creative dialogue.
4) June 18 [Classical Music] – Philharmonia Orchestra – Santtu-Matias Rouvali – Patricia Kopatchinskaja: Works by Glinka, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky
The renowned Philharmonia Orchestra of London, one of the world’s leading orchestras, comes to Odeon of Herodes Atticus in 2024 for an event under the direction of Finnish Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
At just 35, he took over a position previously held by such legends as Toscanini, Karajan, and Muti.
Rouvali’s dynamism and fresh approach are perfectly matched by the explosive temperament of violin soloist Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
She is considered the enfant terrible of classical music, known for her unconventional and passionate interpretations.
5) 25 June 2024 [Dance] – Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Meskerem Mees, Jean-Marie Aerts, Carlos Garbin / Rosas: EXIT ABOVE – after the tempest
One of the most significant creators of contemporary dance, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, returns to Odeon of Herodes Atticus for one of the most amazing events in 2024.
Together with her Rosas group, they will present EXIT ABOVE, her new work acclaimed by critics at major European festivals (Avignon, Vienna, Rome).
This is a choreography for thirteen performers with live music, where the familiar act of walking meets the blues.
The work illuminates how the blues “create” community, the sense of “togetherness,” in a demanding choreography that gradually overwhelms the stage with its explosive energy.
De Keersmaeker enlists here the sound magician Jean-Marie Aerts, the captivating performance of Meskerem Mees, an emerging Flemish songwriter of Ethiopian descent, and guitarist Carlos Garbin.
6) 26 June 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Loreena McKennitt: The Mask and Mirror – 30th Anniversary Tour
Loreena McKennitt returns to Greece after her two sold-out concerts in 2019 in Athens and Thessaloniki, which left outstanding impressions.
The Canadian singer and composer is distinguished for her unique musical style, combining world music with folk elements from Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
This year, she celebrates the 30th anniversary of her iconic album The Mask and Mirror with a European tour.
During her performances, she blends Celtic musical tradition with the sounds of Spain and Morocco.
In her concert in Athens, the first stop of her tour, she will present beloved classic songs in the first part, while in the second, she will perform the entirety of The Mask and Mirror.
7) 28 June 2024 [Classical Music] – Athens State Orchestra – Neeme Järvi: Beethoven’s Ninth
Distinguished lyrical artists of international renown are collaborating with the ASO, all under the experienced baton of Neeme Järvi.
The famous American conductor of Estonian descent will lead the ensemble.
Together they will present Beethoven’s magnificent Ninth Symphony to the Herodion audience.
This immortal masterpiece, undoubtedly one of the highest achievements of the human spirit, changed the course of symphonic music more than any other.
As an unsurpassable legacy of beauty and truth, it represents the most vivid musical expression of humanism, a work-symbol of freedom, dignity, and the fraternity of peoples.
8) 30 June 2024 [Classical Music] – Chamber Orchestra of Europe – Simon Rattle – Magdalena Kožená: Works by Dvořák, Mahler, Bartók, Schubert
The award-winning Chamber Orchestra of Europe has been at the forefront for decades, thanks to its distinctive sound and captivating performances.
This summer, it tours Europe’s major stages under the baton of a podium superstar, British Sir Simon Rattle.
This marks Rattle’s third collaboration with the Orchestra, with which the charismatic conductor declares himself truly in love.
Soloist, the famous mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená in Gustav Mahler’s stirring Five Rückert Songs.
The program also includes Five Hungarian Folk Songs by Béla Bartók and Antonín Dvořák’s Scherzo capriccioso, Op. 66.
Lastly, it concludes with a masterpiece, Franz Schubert’s “Great” Symphony No. 9 in C major.
9) 4 July 2024 [Classical Music] – Grazer Philharmoniker – Vassilis Christopoulos – Alexia Mouza: Works by Strauss, Mozart, Mahler
The Greek conductor Vassilis Christopoulos recently started his tenure as the principal conductor at the Opera and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Graz.
In doing so, he has taken the reins of one of Europe’s historic opera houses.
Odeon of Herodes Atticus warmly welcomes the internationally acclaimed conductor and “his” orchestra, along with the explosive pianist Alexia Mouza, for one of its most remarkable events in 2024.
The program’s works refer, in one way or another, to Vienna’s musical tradition: the delightful Overture from Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus is followed by one of Mozart’s most famous and beloved works, the Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major.
The second part is dedicated to a landmark work of late musical Romanticism, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.
10) 5 July 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Sting
In his impressive career, Sting has won 17 Grammy Awards and sold 100 million albums worldwide.
He is one of the most distinctive solo artists in the world and the former frontman of the Police.
Singer, composer, actor, author, and activist, Sting has also received a Golden Globe, four Oscar nominations, a Tony Award nomination, and Billboard’s Century Award, and was honored by the Kennedy Center.
His support for human rights organizations such as the Rainforest Fund, Amnesty International, and Live Aid exemplifies the global influence of his art.
Along with his wife Trudie Styler, he founded the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect the world’s rainforests and the indigenous populations living there.
The Herodion concert’s special guest will be the talented songwriter and performer Giordana Angi.
11) 10 July 2024 [Classical Music] – The Philharmonic Brass – Philippe Auguin: Works by Gershwin, Williams, Morricone, Shostakovich, Verdi, Mascagni, Dvořák
Formed exclusively of brass and percussion, the Philharmonic Brass was established in 2023 by members of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics.
Prominent musicians from three generations, top in their field, unite their passion and forces aiming to evolve and offer the audience a unique listening experience.
Philippe Auguin, known to the Greek audience, will conduct the orchestra during the 2024 events at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Lastly, they will interpret popular melodies from cinema and the classical repertoire.
12) 12 July 2024 [Classical Music] – Athens State Orchestra – Lukas Karytinos – Khatia Buniatishvili: Works by Tchaikovsky and Bartók
Thanks to a fiery combination of talent, virtuosity, expressiveness, and brilliance, Georgian piano superstar Khatia Buniatishvili consistently enchants her audience.
Wherever she appears, she performs highly demanding works, offering interpretations filled with passion and inspiration.
This year we welcome her to Herodion, to perform perhaps the most popular piano concerto of all times, Tchaikovsky’s First.
Alongside the Athens State Orchestra and esteemed conductor Lukas Karytinos, they will take on the roles of… soloists.
They’ll perform Béla Bartók’s famous Concerto for Orchestra.
It’s a work that stands as the Hungarian pioneer’s most impressive symphonic creation, bursting with vitality and a dance-like mood that verges on the frenetic.
A night promising great emotion!
13) 16 July 2024 [Classical Music] – Jakub Józef Orliński – Il Pomo d’Oro: Beyond
The award-winning Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński is set to captivate the Greek audience at the 2024 events at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
He will showcase not only his voice, acclaimed as the ‘most unearthly beautiful on the planet,’ but also his charismatic presence as a breakdancer.
Along with the outgoing and activist ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro, renowned for its foundation in 2012 by famed virtuosos in the field of historical musical interpretation, they achieve global acclaim.
Their performances in sold-out recitals worldwide have introduced a new generation of listeners to early music.
It’s no coincidence that Orliński’s live-recorded performance of Vivaldi’s aria “Vedrò con mio diletto” (Aix-en-Provence, 2017) has over 11,000,000 views on YouTube.
With Beyond, they present compositions of the early Baroque, many of which are rarely played, in one of the most anticipated and unconventional evenings of this year’s program.
14) 18 July 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Charles Lloyd Sky Quarter – Special Guest Maria Farantouri
Charles Lloyd, the legendary jazz musician, returns to Greece to share the stage once again with Maria Farantouri.
This reunion comes a decade and a half after the historic ‘Athens Concert,’ captivating audiences at Herodion in 2010 and achieving tremendous success with its CD release.
The great American saxophonist and composer recently celebrated his 86th birthday by releasing a new album, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow.
For his performance, he will be joined by three exceptional soloists of international renown.
These include pianist Jason Moran, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Brian Blade.
The paths of jazz intersect with Greek musical tradition and Mikis Theodorakis in a concert of fascinating musical fusions.
15) 27, 28, 30 & 31 July 2025 [Opera] – Greek National Opera – Pier Giorgio Morandi – Konstantinos Rigos: Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata
The program at Herodion concludes with Verdi’s La Traviata, in a production directed by Konstantinos Rigos.
First presented by the Greek National Opera at the Roman Odeon in the summer of 2019, it was met with significant acclaim.
The ill-fated love of the “Lady with the Camellias” for Alfredo Germont, as inspired and set to music by Verdi through melodies of unique power that are indelibly written in the mind and heart, will come alive for four performances.
In the first cast, American opera superstar Nadine Sierra is set to take on the role of Violetta Valery.
She will be joined by the rising tenor Freddie De Tommaso as Alfredo Germont and the internationally recognized baritone Dimitri Platanias in the role of Giorgio Germont.
For the second cast, the Greek National Opera presents two of its internationally recognized stars.
Vassiliki Karayanni will portray Violetta Valery, with Tassis Christoyannopoulos stepping into the shoes of Giorgio Germont.
Completing this ensemble is the famous Italian tenor Francesco Demuro, who will perform as Alfredo.
16) September 2, 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Minos Matsas: Rebetika + Fado-Tango-Blues
Minos Matsas, with his multifaceted musical personality, will present a concert at the Herodion on September 2, featuring “songs of wounded pure and sensitive souls.”
The talented composer will blend rebetika with Fado, Tango, and Blues, showcasing a unique cultural musical fusion.
Keep in mind that rebetika is a Greek music genre, making this performance the only one on the list that doesn’t exclusively feature international music.
Composer Minos Matsas comments: “Rebetika, Portuguese fado, Argentine tango, and American blues all have roots in the social, political, and cultural experiences of their people. They emerged as means of expression through people’s efforts to cope with life’s challenges and convey timeless values that inspire and move listeners around the world.”

17) September 14, 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Ludovico Einaudi
On September 14, the renowned Italian composer will perform in Greece for the first time in seven years, accompanied by his piano and a seven-member orchestra.
Ludovico Einaudi is one of the most successful contemporary music composers, with his pieces garnering billions of streams across various platforms!
His work has gained widespread recognition through film soundtracks (“Intouchables,” “I’m Still Here,” “The Father,” “Nomadland”), TV series (“Doctor Zhivago,” “This is England,” “Acquario”), and commercials.
Iconic pieces like “Experience” and “Fly” are considered modern classics and part of pop culture.
His minimal style, along with the broad influences he has incorporated (including elements from rock, electronic music, and pop), has evolved over his 16 studio albums, notably “Elements” and “In A Time Lapse.”

With 5 GRAMMYs to her name, 45 albums in the top charts, and over 60 million record sales, Dionne Warwick is now considered the “golden lady” of American pop, soul, jazz, and R&B music culture.
Warwick ranks among the top 40 US hit makers and 74th on Billboard Hot 100’s “Greatest Artists of All Time.”
She is the second most successful female singer between 1955–1999.

The French pop-opera diva Emma Shapplin is coming to Athens for a unique concert on Friday, September 20, accompanied by her French band and a large classical choir, at the foot of the sacred rock of the Acropolis!
Known for her interpretive style, millions of record sales, and countless sold-out performances worldwide, Emma Shapplin has rightfully been acclaimed as one of the most influential artists of our time.
Emma made her first huge success with “Spente le stelle” from her debut album in 1997, “Carmine Meo,” which sold over 1,500,000 copies.
With her great talent that combines classical and contemporary music, she will offer us an evening filled with passion, emotion, and unparalleled melodies.

The incomparable music of the Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy-winning composer Hans Zimmer comes to the Herodion for a special concert!
With 80 musicians and performers, each concert of the Lords of the Sound orchestra is etched in the minds and hearts of Hans Zimmer’s thousands of fans around the world.
His works are distinguished by the incorporation of electronic music sounds with traditional orchestral arrangements.
Since the 1980s, Zimmer has composed music for more than 150 films.
He has won two Oscars for Best Original Music for “The Lion King” and “Dune.”
Overall, the German composer boasts over 500 works in his repertoire.
His numerous nominations for global awards testify to the recognition his work has received, while the thousands of tickets sold for each concert featuring his music are just a sample of the public’s love.
21) September 22, 2024 [Dance] – The Stars Shine Under The Acropolis
“The stars shine under the Acropolis!”
Top dancers from the world’s greatest ballets are coming on Sunday, September 22, 2024, to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to offer us one of the most unique events, featuring modern and classical ballet performances.
A dreamy night that will include a panorama of choreographies with masterpieces by the greatest choreographers.
The top etoile dancers from Opera de Paris (Mathieu Ganio & Hannah O’Neill), The Royal Ballet Covent Garden (Fumi Kaneko & Vadim Muntagirov), Berlin State Ballet (Daniil Simkin), Wiener Staatsoper (Kiyoka Hashimoto & Davide Dato), The Royal Danish Ballet (Emma Riiskofoed & Ryan Tomash), and American Ballet Theater (Elizabeth Beyer) promise to enchant the Athenian audience on the stage of the Herodion, under the shadow of the sacred rock of the Acropolis.
22) September 28, 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Septicflesh, Athens State Orchestra: 8th Classic Rock
The 8th Classic Rock presents a crossover project at the Herodion where the rock and metal sounds of Septicflesh meet the symphonic sound of the Athens State Orchestra, for the first time in Greece, on Saturday, September 28.
The Piraeus Vocal Ensemble Libro Coro completes the unique spectacle.
Septicflesh’s symphonic/metal live performance was presented for a unique time in 2019 at the “Metropolitan Theater of Mexico City” with the Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, featuring 140 musicians and a 40-member choir.
The experience will be elevated with the powerful symphonic sound of the Athens State Orchestra and 60 musicians on stage under the direction of the internationally renowned Dutch conductor Koen Schoots.
23) October 1, 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Kamasi Washington
The legend of contemporary jazz-fusion Kamasi Washington is coming on Tuesday, October 1, to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus for an unforgettable night under the Acropolis.
Kamasi Washington, a jazz saxophonist from Los Angeles, is considered the top musician of his generation.
His work is inventive and of high quality, without artistic or political boundaries.
The album “The Epic,” released in 2015, heralded his emergence, followed by “Heaven and Earth” in 2018.
“The Epic” was released with great success, received rave reviews from critics, and won many “best of” awards, including the American music award and the world album of the year, “Gilles Peterson.”
Kamasi Washington’s remarkable feature is the range and variety of his collaborations – he has performed with Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, John Legend, and Raphael Saadiq, blending hip-hop with more traditional jazz.
He has toured with the legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock and cites saxophonist and composer John Coltrane as his inspiration.
24) October 5, 2024 [Contemporary Music] – Goran Bregović
A unique celebration of emotions awaits us this year at the Herodion.
A celebration filled with familiar sounds from Balkan songs that have also become our own.
The famous composer Goran Bregović is coming to Athens and celebrates with us the power of music.
The Herodion concert includes his most famous moments, from the traditional “Ederlezi” and “Time of the Gypsies” to “Mesecina” and “Kalasnjikov” as well as the beautiful “Ausencia” from “Underground.”
At the same time, Goran Bregović will present his favorite discography titled “Three Letters from Sarajevo,” containing a hymn to the composer’s birthplace.
A mosaic of Christians, Jews, and Muslims before the war of the ’90s, Sarajevo had the diversity and open-mindedness of a multicultural society that had much to offer its most restless children.
He will be accompanied by 20 musicians and contributors, including his band, The Wedding and Funeral Band, as well as a string ensemble and choir.

The premier event at the Herodeion is the Athens Epidaurus Festival, which you can find at https://aefestival.gr/?lang=en. In addition to this, there are independent shows that are not part of the festival, which is why it’s not easy to find all the shows on one website. I’ll gather these extra events and update this article with them once they’re announced.

We are currently waiting for new performances to be announced. Unfortunately, nothing has been announced yet, but it is highly likely that more performances will be released in the next few weeks. We will be in Athens from 22 Oct to 28 Oct. Will there still be concerts or shows that late in the year and if so, when will they be announced?

Nothing has been announced yet, as it’s late October, and there usually aren’t any performances during this time of year.
However, given that it has been raining less and less over the past few years, it’s possible that some performances may still be announced.
If anything changes, I’ll update the list.
