At first, only Uber Taxi was available, and in practice it was extremely hard to find a car through the app.
In 2023, Uber Boat also became available on the island, and the service was also available in 2024, though it currently seems not to be working anymore.
However, in 2025 three different transport options became available in Uber for Mykonos:
- Regular Taxi: This option is operated by licensed local taxi drivers, with fares calculated by taximeter based on distance.
- Comfort: This is often the most affordable solution. It is provided by a private company in partnership with Uber in Mykonos, offering services at a flat rate.
- Van: Also offered by a private company. This option is ideal for groups or if you have extra luggage, and it is also at a flat rate.
That said, keep in mind that during peak hours you might end up waiting quite a long time for a driver to accept your request.
Many drivers prefer to switch off the app and pick up passengers directly from the street to avoid paying commission fees.
So, relying solely on the app may not always be the most convenient choice – an issue you will also encounter in many other destinations where Uber in Greece operates.

1. Pre-booked taxi in Mykonos
The last thing you want on your vacation is to be stuck in a queue.
So, if you just landed after a long flight or need to catch one, I recommend using a pre-booked taxi to avoid unnecessary stress.
The service I usually recommend, especially for airport and port transfers, is the local startup Welcome Pickups.
They offer excellent service, have expanded to many cities abroad, and work only with top-rated drivers.
Even though their flat rate is a few euros more expensive, they are worth it.
They will meet you at the pre-arranged point, even if your arrival is delayed, and they have numerous positive reviews on TripAdvisor and Trustpilot.
2. Car Rental in Mykonos
If you prefer to drive and want complete freedom to explore the island, renting a car is a good alternative.
As someone who visited the island for a decade in a row, I almost always rented a car to move around without restrictions.
Two important tips from my experience:
- Choose a jeep if possible, as it’s much better suited for the island’s roads. Small cars are prone to damage, while ATVs are extremely dangerous and you should avoid them at all costs.
- Don’t drink and drive. Unfortunately, traffic accidents are very common on the island, just because of this reason.
So, if you choose the car rental option, make sure you use a price-comparison site with real user reviews.

3. Public Transportation in Mykonos
Public buses -the only form of public transport on the island- are fairly decent for a relatively small destination like Mykonos.
They can take you to the most popular beaches, such as Platis Gialos, Super Paradise, Paraga, Kalo Livadi, Panormos, and Elia.
However, keep in mind that frequency and routes cannot be compared to those of a city network.

4. Street Taxis in Mykonos
If you are not in a rush, you can always try to find a taxi on the street or head to one of the official taxi ranks.
However, be prepared: in Mykonos, finding an available taxi can be very difficult, and during peak hours you might end up waiting even for hours.
Additionally, some drivers may refuse short rides if they don’t consider the route profitable enough.
Another issue to watch out for is the taximeter. Overcharging is common, and in some cases, drivers don’t even turn the taximeter on at all.
Overall, I would avoid street taxis, unless absolutely necessary.
Do I Need Uber in Mykonos?
If you are planning to stay exclusively in Mykonos Town (also known as Chora) or in an all-inclusive resort, you might not need a taxi that often.
Still, especially in the first case, keep in mind that this means missing out on some of the island’s most beautiful beaches.
Distances are too long to cover on foot, and under the hot summer sun, walking isn’t really an option.
In reality, having some form of transportation in Mykonos is almost a must.
- On a limited budget: the local buses are the best option, as they connect Chora with the most popular beaches.
- For flexibility and comfort: pre-booking a taxi for airport and port transfers, and using Uber for your daily commute is the best combination.
- For complete freedom: renting a car is also worth considering. Just be mindful that during peak season traffic can be significant, and finding parking in busy areas is challenging.
