Having rented a car in Athens, in the Greek islands, and also abroad, here is what I’ve learned:

1) Compare prices and book a car online with the most reliable company you can find. If the price difference between a well-known and a lesser-known brand is only a few euros/dollars, it’s worth spending a little extra.

2) Before picking up the car, take photos or videos of the exterior of the vehicle. Look for any existing damage or scratches, and make sure to agree with the rental agent on the car’s condition before signing any documents. You don’t want to be held responsible for damage you didn’t cause.

3) Check the car’s interior as well for any signs of damage.

4) Opt for an insurance package that covers all damages and fully relieves you of any liability. The additional cost is usually a small fraction compared to what you would have to pay in case of an accident.

5) Note the fuel gauge and make sure to return the car with the same amount of fuel as when you picked it up.

6) Ask the rental agent if there are any issues with the car that you should be aware of. This might seem obvious, but rental agents often have long working hours, especially during the summer season. So, there’s a chance they might forget to inform you about something important.

How to Find the Car Rental Offices at Athens Airport

Currently, six car rental companies operate inside Athens International Airport: Avance, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and Sixt.

After you pick up your luggage and exit the arrivals hall, make your way between Gates 3 and 4.

You’ll easily spot the rental offices right in front of you; they’re impossible to miss.

Once you’ve completed the formalities and paperwork, head over to Gate 5.

You’ll notice a large parking area designated for tourist buses as you step outside.

The car rental parking is just across from this area, about 50 meters away.

Representatives from the six rental companies will be there, ready to guide you and hand over your car.

This is also where you’ll need to return the car when it’s time to depart.

Companies Without a Booth at Athens Airport

Besides the six companies mentioned earlier, you can also rent a car from additional companies such as Europcar, Green Motion, and Centauro.

However, these companies don’t have counters inside the airport as they keep their operating costs low.

So, if you opt for one of them, their representatives will be waiting for you outside the arrivals hall with a sign for identification.

Once all the customers are gathered, a shuttle bus will take you to the company’s parking lot.

These shuttle buses usually leave every 10 to 15 minutes, and the parking lots are typically 5 to 7 km (3 to 4 miles) away from the airport. The journey should take around 10 minutes.

If you happen to miss the bus, don’t worry, just wait for the next one.

It’s best not to attempt to walk the distance.
